| How
to find balance?The question:
As a self-employed worker, I make use of as much technology as I can - pager, cell phone and of course my computer - but I still find myself not having time for anything else. How can I gain better balance?
Dr. Spann responds...Evaluate both personal and business situationThere will always be more work to do, so gaining a better balance means deciding that family and relationships are as important as work. First, evaluate your personal life with your significant other. Determine those parts of your life that are missing. Agree on times set aside for yourself, family and relationships.
Set yearly joint goals in one or more of the seven elements of intimate relationships: intellectual, emotional, recreational, aesthetic, spiritual, work purpose and sexual. Set up ways each can help each other stay on track with the personal goals. Agree on how work emergencies will be handled.
Seco nd, make sure the time allotted to your
work is spent as productively as you can. Organize both operational and strategic tasks, and concentrate on the top three critical tasks on each list. If possible, hire someone to do tasks that are not your strengths. Manage the expectations of your clients so they know what's realistic given your new balanced lifestyle. Every six months review how your lifestyle plan is working, and change it as necessary.
